This novella first came out in 1846. It’s the 4th of Dickens’s 5 lovely Christmas book. The story is set in a picturesque village that was established on the site of an epic historical clash. Some locals refer to that grandiose battle as some sort of a metaphor for the ups and downs of a person’s life.
Fact: The Battle of Life is the one and only installment in the 5-book franchise that doesn’t come with any supernatural, fantasy or religious elements. There’s enough romance, drama, and adventure in this novella to get you excited from the very first pages, though.
This isn’t what’s known as a social novel and Dickens made sure that every single character got what he/she deserved. At the same time, it’s one of the least popular works by the legendary writer, even though it does deserve a much wider recognition.
The Battle of Life Summary
The plot follows Grace who lives in a beautiful village with her sister, her father, and two servants. Their mom has passed away, and the man of the house doesn’t really appreciate life – he considers it to be a farce.
Grace’s little sis is engaged to a young man who leaves for the big city to study and become an educated man, with a promise to come back and make her his wife. However, after a series of turbulent events (the future bride disappears into thin air), Grace ends up being his wife and even gives birth to a kid.
It takes the sisters a long time to reunite with each other, but, fortunately, this is a story with a happy ending. As it turns out, Marion, the little one, saw the connection between her man and Grace and wanted to take herself out of the equation. Dickens created a heart-warming, moving and touching tale that will be perfect for a nice evening read during the Christmas holidays.
