After the success of the legendary A Christmas Carol, Dickens was encouraged to write many other short stories, tales, and novels about this wonderful holiday. The Chimes was published approximately a year after the famous book, which makes it the 2nd installment in his 5-story-long franchise about Christmas and everything that it stands for.
Embracing The Spirit Of Christmas
As always, Dickens included relevant and resonating moral messages for his readers, inspiring them to be better than yesterday. Trotty, the main character of this lovely story, is saddened by the things that he reads about in the papers – crime, injustice, inequality, and immorality.
The reports make him wonder whether the working-class folks were always meant to be wild. It’s New Year’s Eve, and the old man wants to believe in magic again. The next day, he gets a visit from his daughter and her man. They want to get married and ask for his blessing.
Erasing The Line Between A Dream And Reality
However, the three of them soon comes across several characters from different social classes that ruin their perfect day. At the end of the story, Trotty wakes up and it feels like it was all just a dream. In the reality, everything’s OK and his daughter is, indeed, marrying her fiancé.
However, the line between real and imaginary is very blurry, and Dickens intentionally wrote the finale in a way that makes you wonder – was it all a dream or not? The Chimes comes with a wonderful atmosphere of celebration and will lift your spirit up, especially if you choose to believe that Meg, the old man’s kid, marries the man she loves and they live happily ever after.
