If you haven’t heard about this novella, that’s because it’s one of the least famous works by Charles Dickens. Still, the master wrote a wonderful story, the 5th and the last installment in the Christmas books series.
As the critics claim, it’s centered on the wonderful spirit of Christmas and not so much on the festivals and the carnivals. Back in 1862, twelve years after the book was published, there was a fancy stage play at the University of Westminster that used a special technique to project a realistic ghost onto the stage.
The Haunted Man Summary
Mr. Redlaw is a professor – he teaches chemistry. The man likes to think about the people that wronged him in the past and focus on the bad things instead of the beauty all around him. He can’t have a normal life because there’s a strange ghost, or, rather, a spirit that haunts him on every step of the way.
It’s like his phantom and looks, acts and feels exactly like the professor himself. So, is it an evil wraith that wants to harm Redlaw? On the contrary: it keeps telling him to let go of the past and move on, to forget the bad things that happened to him back in the day and live a happy, joyful, eventful life.
The teacher is afraid and hesitant at first, but, eventually, accepts his phantom’s offer. After that, he loses his memories about the troubling moments in his past. However, for some reason, he turns into an extremely wrathful man, and so do his students.
The story ends with the man realizing that he can and should be happy. Just like Scrooge, the professor lets go of his old ways and changes into a completely different person.
